www.keepturningleft.co.uk On my way around from Great Yarmouth to Blakeney I went aground off Cromer - while attempting to film the pier. I expected to find sand but instead found rocks. That is the penalty of shoestring cruising - cutting corners on charts means that you don’t actually know what the bottom is like. I damaged the keel but did not know it. A few miles later I got snagged up in some fishing gear - got that off the prop - took a look in the boat to see that it was slowly filling up - about five gallons an hour. The bilge pump was keeping pace and I could see that the stern gland was dripping. I assumed that was the problem. I got the boat to wainfleet pumped some grease into the stern gland and the problem seemd to go away - although the boat was being pumped every other day. Then on a trip from Wainfleet to Brancaster with Jill and the dog the slug started taking on water at an alarming rate. The journey across the wash had swept the clunging wainfleet mud out of the hole. . Bad news. So after a frightening night in Brancaster fearful about what the tide was going to do when it came back we limped into wells and put the boat ashore on the slip.
